US painter and major exponent of Pop and Signal Art | 1928 born in New Castle, Indiana | 1948 attends art seminars at the “Manson-Williams-Proctor Institute” in Utica | 1949-53 joins “School of the Art Institute” in Chicago | 1954 moves to New York | 1955 first contact with Pop Art circles | 1959~ creates experimental sculptures, man-sized constructions made of weathered beams and former ship masts | 1964/65 world’s fair in New York, realises the work EAT with huge illuminated letters | 1965 works as theatre set and costume designer | 1966 creates LOVE | 1978 retires to an artists’ colony on the island of Vinalhaven in Maine | 2018 died in Vinalhaven
