French-Italian sculptor, one of the leading figures in French abstract sculpture of the 1950s | 1911 born in Paris, France, into a family of Italian shoemakers | 1932 takes classes at the “École des Arts Décoratifs” in Nice; studies at the “École des Beaux-Arts” in Paris | 1945~ settles near Grenoble, where he creates sculptures in his studio | 1947 exhibits at the “Salon des Réalités Nouvelles”, Paris | 1954~ takes part in group exhibitions alongside other artists | 1956 moves to the Vaugirard neighbourhood, where his studio still stands today (in 2004, the studio-house was converted into a museum and library, which now houses a permanent exhibition tracing his body of work | 1977 died in Paris – buried in the small cemetery, beneath a gravestone which he had designed himself.
