French painter and sculptor who is considered as a representative of analytical painting and conceptual art. Buren’s trademarks are stripes of different colours, always exactly 8.7 cm wide and applied to a wide variety of shapes and materials | 1938 born in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris | 1960s graduates from the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Métiers d’Art”, Paris; begins painting | 1970 puts stripes on the front and back of Los Angeles bus benches without permission | 1970s + 1980s exhibits in Europe, America and Japan | 1990s his work becomes more architectural | 2005 solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; participates in the “International Triennale of Contemporary Art”, Yokohama | 2007 receives Praemium Imperiale, awarded by Japan’s imperial court
