Japanese architect who combines traditional Japanese architecture with modern architecture, best known for his constructions with cardboard tubes | 1957 born in Tôkyô | 1977-80 studies at “Southern California Institute of Architecture”, Los Angeles | 1980-84 “Cooper Union´s School of Architecture” in New York City, where John HEJDUK was his teacher | 1982-83 works with AOKI Jun in the office of ISOZAKI Arata | 1985 establishes own architectural office in Tôkyô | 1995 founds the “Voluntary Architects’ Network”, a non-governmental organisation with the aim of organising disaster relief in the field of construction | 2000 builds Japanese pavillon at Expo in Hanover in cooperation with OTTO Frei | 2014 honoured by Pritzker Architecture Prize2024 honoured by Praemium Imperiale
