The Zeze castle commissioned by TOKUGAWA Ieyasu was completed in 1601. Located on Lake Biwa, the building replaced the Ôtsu-jô fortress located further north and less strategically in the centre of the City of Ôtsu. An earthquake in 1662 destroyed large parts of the complex. After the end of the feudal period, the castle was completely dismantled in 1870.
