The castle, which today belongs to the city of Hamamatsu, was probably built at the beginning of the 16th century. Towards the end of the same century, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu took over the castle and had it extended. After the battle of Sekigahara (1600), veteran sovereigns and vassals of the ruling TOKUGAWA, the so-called fudai-daimyô, took control of the castle. The destroyed main tower was reconstructed in 1958. A large bronze statue of the first Shôgun TOKUGAWA Ieyasu stands in the castle park.
