Kakegawa City
Kakegawa Castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century by ASASHINA Yasuhiro. TOKUGAWA Ieyasu conquered the castle and had it administered by the IMAGAWA clan. In 1590, the castle falls under the rule of TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi and the IMAGAWA are replaced by the YAMANOUCHI, who add the main tower to the castle. After the “Battle of Sekigahara” (1600), a post station (shukuba-machi) for the Tôkaidô overland route was opened in Kakegawa and the fortress was once again administered by the ruling TOKUGAWA until its destruction in the Meiji period (1868-1912).
