Uwajima-jô was built in 1596 by order of TÔDÔ Takatora, a sovereign who is said to have received the small fiefdom in Uwajima from TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi a year earlier. The original three-storey main tower was added by DATE Munetoshi in the course of extensive expansion and repair work on the castle complex in the mid-17th century.
