In 1601, SAKAZAKI Narimasa of the UKITA clan was given the castle and began an extensive modernisation of the outdated complex. Then in 1616, when his plan to kidnap Senhime, the bride of HONDA Naotoki (1596-1626), was uncovered, he committed seppuku. KAMEI Masanori (1590-1619) then took over the castle. It continued to be owned by the KAMEI clan until the beginning of the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912).
