The remains of the former Yamanaka-jô are located in the Hakone mountains, just behind the old Tôkaidô highway. The castle was built by the HÔJO clan for the defence of Odawara. In 1589, the castle was expanded in preparation for TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi’s attack on Odawara but was surrounded by a massive army the following year and fell in just half a day.
