長浜城 nagahama-jô

rebuilt castle / japanische Burg

Nagahama City

In 1575, TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi had Nagahama castle built on the strategically important Lake Biwa. After the “Battle of Sekigahara” (1600), which decided the fate of the country, the new rulers in Edo (today’s Tôkyô) determined the fate of the castle. Due to the shogunate decree that a province may only have one castle, Nagahama fortress was razed in 1615. The castle and parts of it were used in the construction of Hikone castle. Most of the castle is in ruins, but the main tower (tenshukaku) was reconstructed from concrete in 1983. It´s now a public park.
