The castle tower was built as early as 1586, six years later the castle moats and the high wall in the south had been built. The castle tower, which burned down in 1602 due to lightning, was not replaced; a three-storey watchtower served as a substitute. In 1620 the residence in the main castle and in 1631 the residence in the Ni-no-maru were lost by fire. In 1759 and 1808, the castle was again ravaged by fires. 1872, after the Meiji Restoration, the castle grounds served as a army administrative headquarters. After 1945, Kanazawa University first used the grounds, and later they were given to the city, which converted them into a park. The “Ishikawa Gate” and the “Thirty Clafter Longhouse”, both registered as Important Cultural Properties, remain from the castle.
