The founding of Hiroshima was accompanied by the construction of a fortress at the mouth of the Ota river, commissioned in 1589 by the sovereign MORI Terumoto (1553-1625) and completed after four years. During the Chinese-Japanese War in 1894/95 the castle served as the imperial headquarters. In August 1945, Ri-jô (“Carp Castle”) and the city were razed to the ground in seconds by the detonation of an atomic bomb. Reconstruction of the five-storey main tower in 1958.
