Sunpu-jô, once a gigantic fortress in Sumpu (today Shizuoka), became the headquarters of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu in 1570, to which he retired in 1605 after he had handed over the title of Shôgun to his son. From Sunpu castle Ieyasu sends his troops to Ôsaka castle in 1614, where he fighted Hidetada, the son of his former ally TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi. From the famous fortress there are still walls and moats and a side tower. Reconstruction projects in 1989 and 1996.
