高松城 takamatsu-jô

castle without donjon / japanische Burg

Takamatsu City

Takamatsu-jô castle, built by Ikoma Chikamasa (1526-1603 ) in the town of Takamatsu at the end of the 16th century, is one of the few castles that was not built on a hill above the town but directly by the sea – seawater could therefore be used as a moat. Only the outer ramparts, three corner towers and a gate remain from the castle in today’s Tamamo Park, which was destroyed by fire in the 19th century.
