originally preserved castle / japanische Burg

Himeji City

The castle of the city of Himeji, also called Shirasagi-jô (“Castle of the White Heron”), was completed in 1581 and used as a military base by TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi. Between 1601 and 1614, with the new lord of the castle, IKEDA Terumasa (1564-1613), extensions were made to a total of 78 buildings, including a five-storey main tower and three-storey outer towers in the style of “Momoyama architecture”. During this period, the castle acquired its form, which has been preserved to the present day, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
