Wakayama-jô – Japanese Castle | Hartmut Pohling

Wakayama castle commissioned by TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi was completed in 1585. The place was intended to be the seat of his brother Hidenaga, whom he appointed as sovereign of the then province of Kii. From 1619, the provincial capital Wakayama, along with Mito and Nagoya, became the seat of the “three noble houses” (gosanke), families highly privileged by the government, branches of the TOKUGAWA clan. After the feudal period, Wakayama-jô was sanded down, almost completely destroyed by bombing in 1945 and finally reconstructed in 1958.
