Yasaka-jinja 八坂神社
Yasaka shrine / japanischer Shintô-Schrein
Built in 940, the Gion-yashiro shrine, which has been called Yasaka-jinja since 1868 and is now also called the “Gion shrine”, is dedicated to the storm god Susano-o, his consort Inada-hime and their sons. The present buildings are reconstructed in 1654 in the original Gion style. The shrine’s annual festival in midsummer, the Gion-matsuri, is one of the most famous festivals in the country. The two entertainment districts of Gion-kôbu and Gion-higashi border directly on the shrine grounds.
