The Zeniarai-benten (zeni = money; arai = wash), the much-visited sanctuary of the Benten / Bezaiten (Buddhist protector deity, but also worshipped in Shintô, where she is one of the shichifukujin (“Seven Lucky Gods”), probably dates back to the beginning of the Edo period (1603-1868). In addition to its healing effect, the spring in the cave is also said to help people achieve wealth – especially the faithful who wash their money here on days of the snake and thus gain two or three times the amount.
