Mishima-taisha 三嶋大社
Mishima shrine / japanischer Shintô-Schrein
Mishima City / Shizuoka Prefecture
The Mishima-taisha was probably founded in the 8th or 9th century. MINAMOTO Yoritomo (1147-1199), the first Kamakura shôgun, is said to have prayed for a positive outcome of the war against the enemy Taira in the shrine he renovated. Later, the shrine fell victim to several fires and earthquakes. During the Edo period (1603-1868), Mishima was also one of the more popular postal stations on the old Tôkaidô because of the Mishima-taisha, which travellers liked to visit.
