The 8th-century Fushimi-Inari-jinja, which is located in the south of Kyôto, is famous above all for its rows of torii donated by believers that wind their way to the top of the mountain. The Shintô shrine is dedicated to the rice deity “Inari”- there are about 30,000 Inari shrines in Japan. The stone foxes sitting all over the shrine grounds could also be Inari, as they like to transform into a fox. The rice planting festival (taue-sai) on the shrine grounds – the seedlings blessed by the Shintô priests are planted – is held every year in June.
