Tsurugaoka Hachiman shrine
japanischer Shintô-Schrein
Shrine of the war god Hachiman founded in the early 11th century by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi (998-1075). The site is moved in 1181 by Minamoto no Yoritomo to the centre of Kamakura at the foot of Tsurugaoka Hill and later, after a fire, to the hill itself. Yoritomo asks the deity Hachiman to stay at the shrine to protect the government. A wide road runs from Sagami Bay towards the shrine. Yabusame, archery on horseback, is held annually on the shrine grounds.
