The two Kamo shrines, Shimogamo-jinja (“Lower Shrine”) and Kamigamo-jinja (“Upper Shrine”), were probably founded as early as the 4th century and designated as the city’s shrines of protection in 794, when the capital was moved to Heian-kyô, now Kyôto. The main hall and another hall of Kamigamo-jinja, located on the Kamogawa River, were rebuilt in 1864 in the architectural style of nagarezukuri. Both shrines are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
