Kyôto City

In 1895, when Kyôto celebrated the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the imperial city of Heiankyô, the Heian-jingû shrine complex was completed – a 5/8-scale reconstruction of the imperial palace during the Heian period (794-1192). The shrine comprises the main hall (daigoku-den), the entrance gate ôte-mon and the two towers of the “White Tiger” and the “Blue Dragon” located at the side of the corridor. Behind and around the shrine grounds is the extensive pond garden, designed in the style of Heian palace gardens.
