In Dazaifu-tenman-gû, founded in 905, the statesman Sugawara no Michizane, who was banished from the capital Heian-kyô (today’s Kyôto) to Dazaifu in 901 and died two years later, is worshipped as a deity of learning. After his death, the capital was struck by countless catastrophic forces of nature, the origin of which was assumed to be the angry spirits of Michizane. In 947, the imperial court founded a place of worship in his honour in Heian-kyô, the Kitano-Tenmangû, which centuries later was expanded into a shrine.
