Shintô shrine in Tôkyô´s Yoyogi park, dedicated to Emperor Meiji (1852-1912) and his wife Empress Shôken (1850-1914). The construction of a shrine to commemorate the emperor and his contribution to the modernisation of Japan, which was approved by parliament in 1913, was completed by 1920 on a larger piece of land belonging to the imperial court. Trees to plant the park with were donated by all regions of Japan. Destruction by bombing in 1945. Reconstruction was completed in 1958.
