Izumo no Ōyashiro / Izumo Grand Shrine
japanischer Shintô-Schrein
Izumo City / Ehime Prefecture
In the west of the Shimane Peninsula, in Daisen-Oki National Park, lies the Grand Shrine of Izumo-taisha, also known as Ôyashiro, which, alongside the Ise-dajingû Shrine in Ise and the Atsuta-jingû Shrine in Nagoya, is the oldest and most important Shinto shrine in Japan. The shrine is dedicated to the deity Ôkuninushi no Mikoto (‘Lord of the Great Land’), a descendant of the storm god Susano-o (brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu), who is also worshipped as the god of agriculture – associated with the Buddhist deity Daikokuten.
