Itsukushima-jinja 厳島神社

Itsukushima shrine

japanischer Shintô-Schrein

Miyajima Island

The basic form of Itsukushima shrine was created in 593. The structure that still exists today dates from the 12th century. The main buildings of the shrine rest directly in front of Miyajima Island on raised platforms whose pillars are submerged in water at high tide, so that the whole complex seems to float. They are connected by a 280-metre-long covered corridor. World-famous is the wooden torii from 1875, which stands in front of the shrine. At low tide it can be reached on foot, at high tide it is completely submerged. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in Japan. The shrine and the torii were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
