Tottori Sand Dunes 鳥取砂丘

Tottori Sakyū – which were formed over a period of 100,000 years – are Japan’s largest sand dune system. They stretch for around 16 kilometres along the coast of the Sea of Japan in Tottori Prefecture. The ‘Horse’s Back’ (umanose): The centrepiece is a dune around 50 metres high, from which visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view directly out to the open sea. For that “authentic desert experience”, camel rides and photo sessions are available right by the dunes. The Takahama Café, designed by KUMA Kengo, situated right by the dunes, is a regional architectural highlights and a new landmark.
