Yakushima 屋久島

Kagoshima Prefecture / Kyûshû

Ancient cedars and sickle fir forests, mystical moss landscapes and plenty of water in the form of downpours, small rivers and impressive waterfalls characterise the landscape of Yakushima. The fauna and flora of the island, located 60 kilometres south of the city of Kagoshima, are so unique and the trees are several thousand years old that UNESCO added this wondrous place to the World Heritage List in 1993.
