Cape Kiritappu / Kap Kiritappu

Hamanaka-chô / Hokkaidô

Cape Kiritappu is located on the eastern edge of Hamanaka City and juts out into the vast Pacific Ocean. It offers views of rugged cliffs and dramatic rock formations. The cape is known for its rich wildlife, particularly sea otters, which can be seen year-round, and a variety of seabirds. It is affectionately called Tokkari Cape by the locals – ‘Tokkari’ is the Ainu word for seals, which can often be seen on the nearby rocks. The red lighthouse on a steep cliff, first lit in 1930, features a light with an impressive beam distance of 19 nautical miles.
