Okinawa Islands / Ryukyu Islands / Nansei Islands
Okinawa Island belongs to the group of Ryūkyū Islands. Until the 19th century, the islands formed the independent kingdom of Ryūkyū, who played an important role in East and Southeast Asian maritime trade from the 14th century. Today Okinawa Prefecture consists of over 150 islands in the East China Sea between Taiwan and Japan’s mainland. It is known for its tropical climate, wide beaches and coral reefs – and World War II sites. Naha City is the administrative seat of “Okinawa Prefecture”. Itoman at the southern tip of Okinawa Island is home to the “Okinawa Prefecture Peace Museum”, which commemorates the massive allied invasion in 1945. The “Ocean Expo Park” in Motobu and the “Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park” are popular tourist spots.
