Takachiho 高千穂
Takachiho Gorge / Takachiho-Schlucht
Miyazaki Prefecture / Kyûshû
Takachiho is a city in Miyazaki Prefecture on the Japanese island of Kyushu, best known for its dramatic Takachiho Gorge, rich mythology and historic Takachiho Shrine. The gorge is the result of ancient volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso, whose cooled lava created unique, column-like basalt formations. Takachiho is considered the legendary birthplace of Japanese mythology, where the gods are said to have descended from heaven. Takachiho Shrine was built about 1,900 years ago and is home to deities worshipped for good harvests, happy marriages, and safe travels.
