Cape Muroto, on the Muroto Peninsula, lies at the south-eastern tip of the Japanese island of Shikoku, jutting out into the Pacific Ocean; it is situated within the UNESCO Muroto Global Geopark in Kochi Prefecture. It is designated as a ‘National Place of Scenic Beauty’ and forms part of the “Muroto-Anan Coast Quasi-National Park” – a scenic protected area that stretches along a coastline of around 200 km. A lighthouse has stood on the hill at the headland since 1889; at the foot of the hill stands a bronze statue of NAKAOKA Shintarō, a famous samurai. Hotsumisaki-ji, situated in the mountainous hinterland, is the 24th temple on the ‘Shikoku Pilgrimage’. The “Meoto-iwa” (husband-and-wife rocks) rise out of the sea on the border between the municipalities of Muroto-Misaki and Sakihama.
