Aso-san 阿蘇山

Mount Aso / Berg Aso

East of Kumamoto City, in Aso Kujû National Park (Kyûshû), is the massif of Mount Aso-san with the 800-900 m high and world’s largest caldera (25 x 18 km). The central volcanic crater consists of five young volcanoes, one of which is still active (Naka-dake). The height of the highest mountain (Taka-dake) is 1,592 m. The surrounding volcanic and particularly fertile soil is used for agriculture. Since November 2014, a new eruption phase has produced clouds of ash that have hindered air traffic, and after 1997, there was an outbreak in September 2015. Over the course of summer 2020, activity fell to a normal level.
