Fukuoka City / Hakata City

福岡市 / 博多市

Fukuoka is located on the north coast of Kyûshû Island and is the economic and cultural centre of the region. Fukuoka grew out of the old merchant town of Hakata, located east of the Nakagawa River, and the castle town of Fukuoka, located to the west. In the second half of the 13th century, the region around Hakata successfully repelled the attacks of the Mongol armies under Kublai Khan. Notable projects by Western architects such as Aldo ROSSI, Emilio AMBASZ, Jon JERDE and Michael GRAVES have made the city a fertile ground for architectural experimentation. Nexus World and the “Seaside Momochi Project” has been two of the more interesting experiments on multifamily housing.
