Tokushima, the capital of Tokushima Prefecture with a population of around 240,000 (2026), is situated on the east coast of the island of Shikoku and lies south of the mouth of the Yoshinogawa river on the Pacific Ocean. It is renowned both for its historic Bunraku puppet theatre and the carving of the intricate puppet heads used in the performances, as well as for the cheerful, exuberant street dances held during the Awa-odori festival in August.
