Shimonoseki City 下関市

Around 240,000 inhabitants live in Shimonoseki on the Kanmon Strait, the westernmost city on the main island of Honshû. A tunnel under the sea and the Kanmon-kyô bridge lead to the town of Kitakyûshû on the opposite island of Kyûshû, one kilometer away. In the naval battle of Dannoura (1185), the Taira clan was defeated here by the Minamoto – the child emperor Antoku drowned. The Akama-jingû shrine on Kanmon Quay is dedicated to the memory and soul of the young boy.
