Kitakyûshû City 北九州市 | Kokura City 小倉

Kyûshû

The industrial city, formed in the 1960s from five independent cities, is located in northern Kyûshû, directly on the Kanmon Strait, opposite the city of Shimonoseki. For a long time, the city and its surroundings were considered highly polluted due to immense air and water pollution, prompting major efforts to combat this situation in the 1980s. Today, the city prides itself on having successfully implemented one of the most successful environmental measures.

Kokura, toady´s center of modern Kitakyûshû, was an ancient fortress town that has been part of Kitakyūshū since 1963. In 1945, it was selected as the target for the “Fat Man” atomic bomb, which was then dropped on Nagasaki on August 9 due to weather conditions.
