Kumamoto, also called the “City of Forests”, has about 740,000 inhabitants and is located in the centre of the southern main island of Kyûshû. It has been a castle town – Kumamoto-jô – since the beginning of the 17th century and is today the capital of the prefecture of the same name. In 1632, the Suizenji Jôju-en landscape garden was built in Suizenji Park in the style of the Momoyama era (1568/73-1600/1603).
