Kyū-Furukawa Gardens
旧古河庭園 kyū-furukawa-teien
Japanese garden / japanischer Garten
Kita / Tôkyô
The Furukawa Garden in Tokyo’s Kita district belongs to the Villa of FURUKAWA Toranosuke (1883-1940), which was completed in 1917 in the Western style. The garden directly next to the house was also laid out in the western style with lawns, flowerbeds and boxwood borders. However, the larger, lower part was designed in the Japanese style with the help of a garden architect from Kyôto. The centrepiece of the Japanese garden is a large pond that is densely surrounded by trees. The pond has the classic shape of the “heart sign”, as it is created from 心 painted in one go. There is a “dry waterfall” (kare-san-sui no taki), a “yukimi” stone lantern and an open pavilion (azumaya) for resting.
