Kenroku-en 兼六園

landscape garden / Landschaftsgarten

Kanazawa City

Kenroku-en was created as a garden complex by the MAEDA family, the rulers of Kaga Province at the time. Because of its elevation, Kenroku-en offers a good view of the wide landscape. After several smaller precursors, the construction of the present garden began in 1676 under MAEDA Tsunanori, who also entertained his guests there. Generally, the garden was called Renchitei (“Lotus Pond Garden”). In 1759, part of the garden was lost in a major fire, but from 1774, the 11th head of the house, MAEDA Harunaga, gradually rebuilt it. In 1863, MAEDA Nariyasu enlarged the Kasumi-ga-ike, planted handsome trees and had the “Tatsumi goten“. In 1874, the Kenroku-en was completely opened to the public.
