Kiyosumi-teien Garden

清澄庭園

stroll garden / Wandelgarten

Kiyosumi / Tôkyô

The garden is a former villa of the Baron Iwasaki family. In 1878, IWASAKI Yataro acquired the site, which had been the residence of a feudal lord during the Edo period (1603-1868), and turned it into a villa and garden, which was called “Fukugawa Shinboku-en” – rocks and stones of unusual shapes were collected from all over Japan. In 1920, the southeastern part of the premises was opened to the public. At the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, most of the building and trees were destroyed. After the earthquake, the relatively less damaged eastern half was donated by IWASAKI Hisaya to the City of Tôkyô so that it could be maintained permanently as a park. In 1928, a building used for the funeral of Emperor Taishô was given to the park.
