Daimyō garden and villa of the Shimazu clan, feudal lords of Satsuma. The remains of the former Shūseikan reverberatory furnace within the grounds are a component asset of the World Heritage site ‘Industrial Revolution Sites of Meiji Japan’. Constructed as a seaside villa by SHIMAZU Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the SHIMAZU clan, the garden features Sakurajima as a borrowed landscape across Kinko Bay. It is designated as a “National Scenic Beauty Site”.
