Sanja-matsuri 三社祭

“three shrines festival”

Sanja-matsuri, the “Three Shrines Festival”, is one of the three major festivals in Tôkyô – along with Kanda-matsuri and Sannô-matsuri. It is one of Japan’s most exuberant festivals and is celebrated on the third weekend in May in honour of the founders of the Sensô-ji temple in Asakusa. The famous parade with dance and music and three portable Shinto shrines (mikoshi) attracts up to 2 million visitors every year.
