This Grand Festival (例大祭) at Nikkô Tôshôgû Shrine is held on 17 & 18 May every year. The “procession of a thousand warriors”, is a huge parade of people dressed in the military garb of the Edo period (1603-1868) and re-enacts the procession which bore the remains of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu (1543-1616) – founder and first shōgun of the Tokugawa shogunate – from Sumpu (today City of Shizuoka) to their new resting place at Nikkô.
