Riverwalk Kitakyushu is a large-scale mixed-use commercial complex opened in 2003. The US architect office “The Jerde Partnership” was responsible for the architectural design, also known for their designs of Roppongi Hills, Canal City Hakata and Namba Parks. The exterior gives the impression of a cluster of independent buildings, and the colours used for each building represent a fusion of traditional Japanese colour aesthetics: brown (earth), black (Japanese roof tiles), white (plaster walls), red (lacque) and yellow (rice ears before harvest). The design takes into account the fact that Kokura castle is situated adjacent to the south side. Michael GRAVES designed the faculty of design from the “University of West Japan”.
