Ômishima 大三島
Island of Ômishima
Ômishima is the largest inhabited islands in the Geyo Islands, located in Imabari, in the northernmost part of Ehime prefecture. It is known as the “Island of the Gods”, where Ôyamazumi Shrine is located, the headquarters of the Mishima shrines. The island was originally poorly vegetated with many bald mountains. Most of the forests that exist today were planted after the Meiji period (1868-1912). The prehistoric vegetation is thought to have consisted mainly of ubame oak, tobera and camphor trees. A total of four art museums are an additional highlight of the tour: ITÔ Toyô’s Museum of Architecture, his Silver Hut and the Ken Iwata Mother and Child Museum as well as the “Ôkushima Tokoro Museum” designed by YAMAMOTO Hideaki.
