World Expo 2025

Yumeshima Island / Ôsaka City

The Japan International Exposition “Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025,” held on Yumeshima in Ôsaka, had the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” and was the first international exposition to be held on an artificial island originally created as a landfill site. 158 countries and over a dozen renowned Japanese and international architects – their pavilions and other buildings were surrounded by the Grand Ring – were taking part: BAN Shigeru | Norman FOSTER | FUJIMOTO Sou | Manuel HERZ | ITÔ Toyô | KUMA Kengo | LAVA | NIKKEN SEKKEI | RAU ARCHITECTS | SANAA | WOO ARCHITECTS. Right next to Yumeshima lies the neighbouring island of Maishima, home to two  colourful industrial buildings designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Friedensreich  HUNDERTWASSER: Maishima Incineration Plant (2001) and Maishima Sludge Center (2004)
