St John’s Church is protected as an “Important National Cultural Property of Japan”. It originally stood in the Shimogyō district of Kyôto and was designed by the American missionary and architect James McDonald GARDINER. Following the lifting of the centuries-long ban on Christianity in Japan in 1873, it served as a Japanese Anglican church.
